Josep Roca nació en Gerona in 1952. Obtuvo su Doctorado en Medicina en la Universitat de Barcelona en 1982.
Es coordinador del programa de Atención Integrada y Jefe de Sección en el Servicio de Neumología en el Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Profesor Titular del Departamento de Medicina y Coordinador del Máster en Medicina Respiratoria.
Autor de 180 artículos originales, editor de 3 libros, autor de 51 capítulos de libros y 50 revisiones. Actualmente, su área principal de interés es la investigación de nuevos modelos de asistencia para enfermos crónicos utilizando las tecnologías de la información y comunicación (TIC).

Es coordinador de los proyectos NEXES (CIP-PSP. Contract 225025, Supporting Healthier and Independent Living for Chronic Patients and Elderly, 2008-2011) y BioBridge ((FP6-2005-LIFESCIHEALTH-7, Contract nº 037909, Integrative Genomics and Chronic Disease Phenotypes: modelling and simulation tools for clinicians, 2006-09). Entre sus responsabilidades en sociedades médicas y científicas destaca la presidencia de la  European Respiratory Society (ERS) de 2000-01.
